Hungry @ Home MinistryWe have partnered with our friends at First Baptist Church and “adopted” our neighborhood school, SL Mason, to begin the Hungry At Home ministry. H@H is a program which began in an effort to make sure our students were not hungry at home over the weekend. The school identifies the children in need and the ministry provides a backpack with 6 healthy meals and 4 snacks in a backpack for the child to take home over the weekend. They return the backpacks on Monday.
The backpacks are distributed in a manner in which the children remain anonymous. |
How Can You Help?
VolunteeringIf you would be interesting in volunteering to pack the backpacks, please contact Emily Powell with our church at: empowell@valdosta.edu
| Donating Food & ItemsIf you would like to donate food items, some suggested items are as follows: non-perishable, easy open containers, non-glass, no refrigeration or heating required. Single serving size is preferred and small enough to fit into a backpack with several other items. Examples include: canned meats with pop tops, juice boxes, small boxed cereal, milk boxes, fruit cups, chips or pretzels, cheese or peanut butter crackers, granola bars, etc. As well, gently used backpacks are always welcomed. As well, if you have any extra Rubbermaid totes around the house that could be used in our SL Mason food pantry to sort food items, please bring them to the church office.
229.242.4050 | Financial SupportIf you would like to contribute financially, that would be a blessing, too. Through the ministry, we are able to purchase food from the Second Harvest Food Bank at appx. 19 cents/pound. Because of this, every dollar donated makes a difference.
It is estimated that it costs about $7/child/week or about $1.25/meal or about $3.50/day. Any amount you can give would be a blessing. If you would like to sponsor a child for an entire school year, a one time donation of $250 would truly be the hands of Jesus in the life of that child. Any donations may be earmarked Hungry At Home and will get to the right place. Checks made out to "First UMC" |
